S68 Review

Written by Amstel Flanders at 20:16 21/4-2024

Welcome again to another resume of the Amstel Flanders season. A quick review to a season that won’t be forgotten easily. We had it all, joy, drama, unexpected surprises that changed the team in many ways and lots of good results.

This season's word definitely one above all: Sønderby. With the expected arrival of Normann and Shcheglov there was no room for the Danish hill sprinter. The management did not handle the case well, though, and Emil learned the Team’s plans through its social media. Manager Williamson regretted such terrible mistake to not inform him face to face, explaining the complex situation that was forcing him out of the team: lack of results and money issues, despite having his best performance the season before (S67).

With such a lower starting bid (27y/TF ready/300k), far from his true market value, we believed it was a matter of waiting bid after bid to raise enough funds for the last transfer (Normann), however, not a single bid was received for the transferable rider; manager Williamson made clear that his price was the lowest and it’d only increase after deadline expired. Still, no bids.

Furious and anxious, Manager Williamson chose Vandenbosch and he was put for sale. Surprisingly we sold him for way too much the expected price (we aimed to receive 200k with luck), so the Greenlander legend came to Flanders without problems. And the season began…

Of course, all this rough situation would have broken any weak rider. But our man was ready to show all those blind and inexperienced managers the terrible mistake they had made. Win after win, Sønderby conquered and kicked ass like his viking ancestors, along with his team mates they put Amstel Flanders at Zyte Division for the first time, as high as 74th place (1828 points at that moment).

Emil became the first rider of our team that ever finished in the top 100 of OCM Tour Ranking, scoring all the wins and most results; including two sprint jerseys. Only missing Perm Jersey due to a bad stage, repeating his 2nd place in SC. Many managers contacted the team to hire him as they witnessed his success, even asking for more discount (like if 300k wasn’t too low for him).

A season full of records and great moments of brilliance, also we tested the harder competition and skills of D2, molesting the sprints of some big names like Ulrichsen (giggles). For S69, we expect to be less competitive since we might lose some key riders due to retirement, if the squad can keep up it will be great, though dropping down to D3 won’t be a drama as we are not ready yet to compete in Zyte, despite buying some elite equipment. Frames must be next.

This season also marked another step in the sunset of Iranman’s career, finishing without points since S55 (debut season, hired at D85 and no training done). For the first time Sam worked for other riders and shared his vast experience and winning spirit to Sønderby, with a good outcome.

Here you can check our leaders season in few numbers.

By far our most successfu season ever. We still need to break that barrier of 7 wins, hopefully we will try to do so by S70, with new younger riders. For the moment, we enjoy this good feeling.

We haven’t been too active this season in the market, besides a small purchase. As we stated in the beginning, our team had to chase better equipment to keep up the pace.

Keeping green numbers to hire our local talent, then collect the cash for the American dude and train the Israeli rider. Likely they will be key for the team in the future.
